Quantum

Journey.

On multiple occasions I started to engage in Quantum Computing. Occasionally, I give updates on major touchpoints with the matter:

2022 Working Paper: Quantum Computing

On 18.08.2022, I came across the article "Quantum computing for the very curious" by Matuschak and Nielsen in Quantum Country.

I worked through the article in 3 days. The outcome was Version 1 of my working paper: Quantum Computing (then: Quantum Gates & Quantum Algorithms). I hoped that by doing so, I could improve my LaTeX skills and simultaneously document my newly acquired knowledge.

This way, it would certainly be easier for me to revisit the topic if it becomes relevant again.

2023 IBM Basics of Quantum Information

Over the Christmas break, I decided to revise my working paper on Quantum Computing. I reformatted everything in the IEEE style and began the IBM course "Basics of quantum information" that I had found throughout the year. With that knowledge, I supplemented my working paper on Quantum Computing. So far, I heavily relied on Andy Matuschak and Michael Nielsen (2019). I've reached the 2/4 part of the course where Qiskit was introduced. So far, I have relatively little experience with Python. I had only learned the basics (variables, functions, and loops, etc.) once before, but have since forgotten. Setting up an environment in VSCode was also a bit of a challenge in itself. But with a little DuckDuckGo, you can figure it out.

2023 Quantum VR. Fun!

27.09.2023. I found the game "Quantum VR" by SZENARIS GmbH on Steam, which was developed in collaboration with TU-Braunschweig. The game teaches players the individual logic gates in a playful manner and allows them to solve tasks to rescue quirky animals from a laboratory.

The game can be easily completed within 1-2 hours and also features an endless mode.

2024 Simulation of

QC using FPGA

(not my own project!)

At the Jugend Forscht 2024 exhibition at Leuphana University, I explored projects on FPGA-based quantum algorithm simulation and optical quantum computing. This sparked an idea: adapting fixed quantum algorithms onto physical hardware for computational efficiency. Could analog computers be a solution? Discussions ensued with peers, but challenges in accuracy arose. Yet, analog simulation might suffice for less precision-demanding applications.

I got the contact of the person and reviewed his submission paper.

To explore even further, I signed up for a VDI event on "Quantum Computing for Maritime Logistics" to explore industry applications. Where I got introduced to the topic of annealers.

2024 Maritime Logistics optimized using QC

VDI x Fraunhofer CML Hamburg Harburg.

Despite feeling fatigued from exam preparations, I decided to attend the event. As I arrived at the Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML) in Hamburg-Harburg, I found myself contemplating whether to join the gathering of professionals, predominantly older than myself.

During the presentation by Dr.-Ing. Anisa Rizvanolli, a researcher at CML, I gained valuable insights into the complexities of maritime logistics and the role of QC in addressing these challenges. Dr. Rizvanolli's discussion highlighted innovative approaches, including the use of Mixed Integer Reverse Programming (MIRP) and Quantum Algorithms via D-Wave. The event sparked discussions about the transformative potential of QC across various industries.

Place #2 SOFE 2022

Finalist

Place #1 SOFE 2022

(regional heat: Hamburg metropolitan region)

🗣️On Thursday, November 17th, the first #SpeakOutForEngineering German national final took place in Düsseldorf. Speak Out for Engineering is a student #competition from the British Engineering Association @IMechE.

➡️Five candidates from across the country competed for the qualification for the European finals and a prize money of £ 300. In a 20-minute presentation followed by questions the candidates had to present a mechanical engineering related topic of their choice in front of interdisciplinary jury. The focus of the evaluation was on the “soft” aspects of a presentation, the technical content was secondary. All candidates presented at a high level and gained valuable experiences. 💪

1️⃣The winner is Alexander Eckervogt with his presentation “Floating Offshore Turbines”. 🏅

2️⃣ Runner up is Florian Wabnitz presenting about “Implementation of Additive Manufacturing”.

Further finalists were Simon Schorlemmer with “Digital Twins in the Construction Industry”, Amir Dastgheibifard with “Water Reuse” and Merve Felek with “Mass Spectrometry”.

💬 👥 The jury consisted of representatives from VDI headquarter (Thomas Kiefer), VDI Young Engineers (Marten Berlin), IMechE (Raymond Hodgkinson), university (Nicole Lefort) and industry (Nadine Bey).

MGA hackathon 2023

At the headquarters of VDI, 9 teams were tasked to design a landingpod for heavy weight drones in an own use case. This included coming up with ideas, creating a CAD model, geometrically optimizing it with Altair software and 3D printing a prototype using the Ultimaker 3.

We worked day and night to develop a prototype, a full business plan, including finances and marketing strategy to pitch our results in front of a renowned jury (Airbus, Altair, Autodesk, Copteruni GmbH, Composite Technology Center / CTC GmbH (An Airbus Company), Deutsche Bahn, Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg und Volocopter GmbH)

MEMS sensors lab project

As part of a sensors lecture I specialized in measuring vibration using a 3-axis MEMS-based acceleration sensors (Andrjašic, 2008 / Chollet, 2018). To record first sensory data for being granted support of the supervisor, I took the initative to build a first rudimentary experimental setup using my mother's salad spinner and the smartphone's built-in sensor via the phyphox app.

The next step I sourced the industrial grade Artis Marposs CS-3D MEMS and narrowed my research focus to measuring material degradation due to vibration using this type of sensor.

An air compressor was used to apply vibrations to mechanical dampening material for a prolonged period of time. The analog data was captured and converted to digital signal using an Arduino Uno. Using Fast Fourier transformation (FFT) on the dataset before and after the prolonged exposure to the air compressor, a difference could be determined. This insight highly relevant, as mechanical dampening is critical to devices with moving parts. If implemented correctly, it could replace the need for visual inspection - for instance on airplane shock absorbers.

STEP cohort 2022

STEP is an evidence-based, action-oriented entrepreneurship training where students can take part voluntarily. It aims to teach entrepreneurial skills and strengthen entrepreneurial self-efficacy. In a short version of the training, the students learned step-by-step to start their own businesses and develop skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue an entrepreneurial career. The STEP training is evaluated according to the highest scientific standards, and the evaluation studies have shown that the STEP training has short- and long-term effects on trainees’ entrepreneurial mindset and behaviour.

TNFS “using statistics for smart truck driving”

TNFS software utilizes live satellite data to monitor traffic flow on highways. TNFS can detect a traffic jam tens of kilometers ahead and can predict the emergence of a phantom traffic jam based on traffic density within confidence intervals. The good thing? The TNFS driver assistance system provides warnings, recommends target speeds, or suggests alternate routes to avoid the traffic jam. To control target speeds, TNFS leverages the already installed truck cruise control system, saving development costs.

Declaration of Independence.

by John Perry Barlow (1996)

Cyberphilosophia

Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.

We have no elected government, nor are we likely to have one, so I address you with no greater authority than that with which liberty itself always speaks. I declare the global social space we are building to be naturally independent of the tyrannies you seek to impose on us. You have no moral right to rule us nor do you possess any methods of enforcement we have true reason to fear.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. You have neither solicited nor received ours. We did not invite you. You do not know us, nor do you know our world. Cyberspace does not lie within your borders. Do not think that you can build it, as though it were a public construction project. You cannot. It is an act of nature and it grows itself through our collective actions.

You have not engaged in our great and gathering conversation, nor did you create the wealth of our marketplaces. You do not know our culture, our ethics, or the unwritten codes that already provide our society more order than could be obtained by any of your impositions.

You claim there are problems among us that you need to solve. You use this claim as an excuse to invade our precincts. Many of these problems don't exist. Where there are real conflicts, where there are wrongs, we will identify them and address them by our means. We are forming our own Social Contract. This governance will arise according to the conditions of our world, not yours. Our world is different.

Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.

We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth.

We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity. Your legal concepts of property, expression, identity, movement, and context do not apply to us. They are all based on matter, and there is no matter here.

Our identities have no bodies, so, unlike you, we cannot obtain order by physical coercion. We believe that from ethics, enlightened self-interest, and the commonweal, our governance will emerge. Our identities may be distributed across many of your jurisdictions. The only law that all our constituent cultures would generally recognize is the Golden Rule. We hope we will be able to build our particular solutions on that basis. But we cannot accept the solutions you are attempting to impose.

In the United States, you have today created a law, the Telecommunications Reform Act, which repudiates your own Constitution and insults the dreams of Jefferson, Washington, Mill, Madison, DeToqueville, and Brandeis. These dreams must now be born anew in us.

You are terrified of your own children, since they are natives in a world where you will always be immigrants. Because you fear them, you entrust your bureaucracies with the parental responsibilities you are too cowardly to confront yourselves. In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.

In China, Germany, France, Russia, Singapore, Italy and the United States, you are trying to ward off the virus of liberty by erecting guard posts at the frontiers of Cyberspace. These may keep out the contagion for a small time, but they will not work in a world that will soon be blanketed in bit-bearing media.

Your increasingly obsolete information industries would perpetuate themselves by proposing laws, in America and elsewhere, that claim to own speech itself throughout the world. These laws would declare ideas to be another industrial product, no more noble than pig iron. In our world, whatever the human mind may create can be reproduced and distributed infinitely at no cost. The global conveyance of thought no longer requires your factories to accomplish.

These increasingly hostile and colonial measures place us in the same position as those previous lovers of freedom and self-determination who had to reject the authorities of distant, uninformed powers. We must declare our virtual selves immune to your sovereignty, even as we continue to consent to your rule over our bodies. We will spread ourselves across the Planet so that no one can arrest our thoughts.

We will create a civilization of the Mind in Cyberspace. May it be more humane and fair than the world your governments have made before.
